Khalilzad: U.S. Should Be Forward-Looking in Dealing with “Moderate” Taliban Leaders
Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. special representative for Afghanistan, advised Washington not to be “under the influence of the past and the desire for revenge” when dealing with Taliban officials such as Sirajuddin Haqqani, Abdul Ghani Baradar, and Yaqoob Mujahid. He said the U.S. approach towards these leaders should be based on future interests and goals.
Khalilzad emphasized that the U.S. should test the intentions of these Taliban leaders and their ability to fulfill their demands, but it is too early to reach an optimistic conclusion about their performance.
