First International Commercial Flight Lands in Damascus Post-Assad
On Tuesday, the first international commercial flight since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government landed at Damascus airport. The flight originated from Qatar and entered Syria. Jordan’s state news agency Petra also reported that a royal airline aircraft from the country conducted a test flight to Damascus.
Haitham Mistu, the head of the Civil Aviation Regulation Commission, who was on board with a team of experts, announced that the purpose of the flight was to assess the technical condition of Damascus airport before resuming regular flights.
Following the entry of Tahrir al-Sham rebels into Syria last month, which led to the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, Arab and Western countries that had severed ties with the former government have resumed diplomatic relations with Syria’s new authorities.
