Doug Mills, a veteran photographer for the New York Times, received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize on Monday for capturing the historic moment of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. This historic event occurred during Trump’s campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July last year.
Mills, who has over three decades of experience in photojournalism, was perfectly positioned at the moment of the incident. In an interview about that fateful day, he said: “At that moment, I happened to be right below the president’s platform shooting with a wide-angle lens. A huge flag was waving above his head, and I was just taking pictures at that exact moment.”
The professional photographer continued: “When I heard the sound of gunshots, I think I just instinctively kept pressing the shutter button repeatedly. Then I saw him raise his hand to his ear. His face grimaced in pain, he looked at his hand and saw blood. Then he fell to the ground, and I just said to myself: My God, he’s been shot!”
In this incident, the bullet struck Trump’s ear but fortunately did not cause serious injury. One attendee at the rally lost their life, and two others were wounded. The shooter was killed by security forces.
The Pulitzer Prize jury described Mills’ photograph as “capturing a historic moment of exceptional significance.” The Pulitzer Prize, awarded since 1917, is the most prestigious journalism award in America and is presented annually for outstanding news reporting, investigative journalism, literary works, and artistic achievements.
