The Taliban’s Mining and Petroleum Authority in Panjshir has announced the sale of 4,700 carats of emeralds from the province, valued at $468,600.
Mohammad Qasim Amiri, head of the Taliban’s mining department in Panjshir, confirmed that these emeralds were sold to domestic traders through an auction.
The Taliban had previously sold over 1,000 carats of Panjshir emeralds earlier in May 2025. According to reports, the Taliban’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum claims to have sold more than 75,000 carats of Panjshir emeralds worth $4,716,923 to date and has issued 586 mining licenses for extraction operations in Panjshir province.
The Taliban consistently claims that revenues from emerald sales are added to the “national income.” Since taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has extensively expanded mining operations and the sale of mineral resources across the country, which experts say constitutes a significant portion of the group’s revenue.
