Over three consecutive days, the Taliban’s Supreme Court has carried out flogging punishments in several Afghan provinces.
On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the Taliban flogged two people, including one woman, in Hazrat Sultan district of Samangan province on charges of “extramarital relations and fleeing home,” administering 39 lashes to each in public.
On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, a man in Chak district of Maidan Wardak province was publicly flogged 39 times on charges of “homosexuality” and additionally sentenced to five years in prison.
On Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Taliban flogged two more people, including one woman, in Badakhshan province for “fleeing home and adultery,” each receiving 39 lashes.
These punishments are part of a broader pattern showing the Taliban’s escalation of public punishments. Statistics indicate that the Taliban have flogged nearly 590 people in public throughout 2024.
These actions continue despite opposition from human rights organizations that condemn such punishments as torture, with the Taliban justifying them as implementation of what they consider Islamic law.
