The US State Department has appointed Dan Brown as the new acting US Ambassador for Afghanistan.
The US Embassy announced in a brief statement on Thursday, August 22, 2025, that Brown is replacing Karen Decker, who has retired from the US State Department.
Decker had served for many years as the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Mission to Afghanistan.
According to the report, Dan Brown has been serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission for Afghanistan since November 2023.
Based on the biography published by the embassy, he specializes in counter-terrorism, political-military affairs, and combating transnational and financial crimes, and also has experience in political and economic affairs.
Following the collapse of the previous Afghan government and the Taliban group’s takeover, the US Embassy was relocated from Kabul to Doha, and American diplomats now operate from Qatar.
The US Embassy in Kabul remains closed. Before his current position, Brown served as the Deputy Director of the Office of Terrorism, Narcotics, and Crime Analysis at the US Bureau of Intelligence and Research.
