Italian researchers have developed “Robot Drummer,” a humanoid robot capable of performing precise and expressive drumming across more than thirty rock, metal, and jazz tracks.

Using reinforcement learning, this robot can acquire complex rhythmic skills and execute precisely timed drum strikes with perfect coordination throughout entire performances.

The researchers formulated drumming as a Rhythmic Contact Chain and divided each musical piece into smaller segments to solve the challenge of long-horizon musical performance.

Interestingly, the robot spontaneously developed human-like behaviors such as cross-arm strikes, demonstrating the potential of reinforcement learning to bring humanoid robots into the realm of creative artistic performance.
Published in arXiv, “Robot Drummer” showcases not only technical precision but also expressive aspects of music, achieving over 90% accuracy across various genres.

This breakthrough could mark a pivotal expansion of humanoid robot capabilities from practical tasks into creative and artistic domains.
