France announced on Thursday that the long-term prison sentences issued against two French citizens in Iran were baseless and arbitrary, demanding their immediate release.

Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been in detention since 2022 and have been convicted of espionage charges, conspiracy against Iran’s national security, and cooperation with Israeli intelligence services.

French officials have declared these charges completely baseless and the punishments arbitrary.

France has repeatedly protested this case, stating that Kohler and Paris are being held in torture-like conditions in Evin prison and have been denied proper consular access.

These sentences were issued while negotiations between Tehran and Paris for the release of these two individuals were ongoing last week. In a reciprocal response, Iran has accused France of arbitrarily detaining Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian student, for posting anti-Israeli content on social media.
