The first direct flight between India and China after a five-year hiatus took place on Sunday, October 26th, from Kolkata to Guangzhou.
This IndiGo flight, departing at 21:53 local time, marks the first sign of improving relations between the world’s two largest economies.
Direct passenger flights between the two countries were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and following border tensions in 2020.
IndiGo has announced it will begin regular flights between Delhi and Guangzhou starting Monday, November 10th, with a Chinese airline set to resume Shanghai-Delhi flights shortly after.
This agreement comes as both countries face trade tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi first announced the decision to resume direct flights during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
