Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has warned that Pakistan’s rushed constitutional amendments risk undermining the independence of the judiciary. He said these changes raise serious concerns about accountability of military institutions and respect for the rule of law.
According to Türk, any constitutional change should be made with full consultation and in accordance with human rights principles to ensure justice and transparency. He emphasized that weakening judicial independence could negatively impact democracy and human rights.
This warning comes as debates over the role of the military and judiciary in Pakistan have intensified, especially in December this year.
