Abdul Hakim Sharaee, the Taliban’s Minister of Justice, has claimed respect for followers of all Islamic sects, despite reports of forced conversion of Ismailis in Badakhshan and efforts to eliminate Jafari jurisprudence.

He made these remarks in his ministry’s annual message.

The Taliban minister attended international meetings in Russia and Saudi Arabia in 2025, speaking of unity among sects. However, inside Afghanistan, religious minorities face increasing restrictions in practicing their faith and authorities are reportedly seeking to remove their recognition.

Local sources have confirmed that over 50 Ismaili families in Badakhshan have been pressured to change their sect.

This dichotomy between the Taliban’s rhetoric and actions has raised serious concerns among human rights organizations and minority communities regarding religious freedom.
