Women in Herat are facing a severe mobility crisis as taxi drivers increasingly refuse to pick them up, fearing retribution from the Taliban.
Reports indicate that women are left waiting for hours at stops, with drivers bypassing them even when their cabs are empty .
The refusal stems from strict warnings issued by the Taliban’s Vice and Virtue officials, who have instructed drivers not to transport women without “proper hijab.” Recently, agents have been seen forcing women out of vehicles for not wearing the specific prayer shawl (Chador-namaz) mandated by the group .
Compounding the issue is the prior ban on rickshaws, which had been a primary mode of transport. With taxis now effectively off-limits, many women are forced to walk long distances for daily errands, further restricting their freedom of movement and access to public life .
