Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, announced that the “Sanopharma” pharmaceutical factory in Kandahar will double its output by the end of the solar year. The facility currently manufactures 192 different types of medicines.
Writing on X, Mujahid stated that the expansion aims to meet 40 percent of the country’s medical needs locally. Boosting domestic pharmaceutical production is seen as a key step in reducing reliance on imported drugs.
While Afghanistan still imports the vast majority of its medicine, this development signals a push towards self-sufficiency. Economic observers are watching to see if local production can match international quality standards.
