In a record-breaking display of corporal punishment since their return to power, the Taliban flogged 36 individuals in public in Khost province on Monday.
The accused faced charges ranging from “illegitimate relations” to other moral offenses, receiving between 10 and 39 lashes each.
Data indicates a surge in such punishments, with at least 140 people, including 8 women, flogged across 17 provinces in the last month alone.
The Supreme Court of the Taliban confirmed these sentences were carried out after approval from their judicial bodies.
Despite repeated calls from the United Nations to halt these “inhuman” public punishments, the practice is escalating.
Legal experts condemn the lack of due process, noting that citizens are being subjected to brutal penalties without proper legal defense .
