Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Representative, and Richard Bennett of the UN have strongly criticized the Taliban’s newly published “penal code” as a violation of rights. Lindsay stated that a peaceful Afghanistan requires respect for all citizens, noting the new rules target women and minorities.
The controversy arises from a document released by the Taliban that reportedly formalizes corporal punishments and acknowledges slavery. Human rights bodies warn this framework explicitly enables the suppression of ethnic minorities and political opponents.
Bennett expressed deep concern, stating that while the code is being reviewed, its contents are alarming. The international community fears these regressive laws will further isolate Afghanistan and deepen the humanitarian crisis.
