The Taliban’s disaster management authority reports that landmines and unexploded ordnance have killed 87 people across Afghanistan in the past year. Tragically, 67% of the victims are children, who often encounter these deadly remnants of war while playing or traveling.
A total of 193 explosions were recorded during this period, leaving 333 others injured. Despite the end of major combat operations, the legacy of decades of conflict continues to claim lives, with unexploded devices littering many rural and urban areas.
Authorities claim to have provided risk education to over one million people regarding mine safety. However, critics note that the Taliban themselves were responsible for extensive mining of roads and villages during their insurgency, creating the very hazards now killing civilians.
