The Taliban Supreme Court has announced the public flogging of seven individuals in Laghman province accused of “sodomy” and theft. According to the statement, six of the men received 39 lashes each and a one-year prison sentence, while the seventh was sentenced to two years in prison.
This incident follows similar punishments carried out just a day earlier in Faryab and Paktia provinces. International human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned the Taliban’s resumption of corporal punishment, calling it a violation of international law and human dignity.
Human Rights Watch noted in its annual report that the Taliban have increased the use of physical punishments across the country. These sentences are often handed down in summary trials where the accused lack access to legal representation or due process.
