The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that nearly two-thirds of all maternal deaths globally occur in countries facing conflict and instability. In 2023 alone, approximately 160,000 women lost their lives due to pregnancy-related causes in crisis-affected environments.
The report highlights a stark disparity, stating that pregnant women in war-torn nations are up to five times more likely to die than those living in stable countries. The mortality rate in conflict zones averages 504 deaths per 100,000 births, compared to just 99 in stable regions.
WHO emphasized that maternal mortality remains alarmingly high in low-income and fragile states. The organization calls for immediate humanitarian and medical interventions to address the lack of healthcare access that endangers mothers in these vulnerable settings.
