Writing for Foreign Affairs, she noted that erasing women from public life was one of the regime’s first actions upon retaking power .
In her essay titled “Women’s Rights are Democratic Rights,” Clinton argues that the suppression of women is a calculated move to consolidate power, rather than a religious necessity, pointing out that Islam and democracy coexist elsewhere. She highlights how girls were swiftly barred from schools and women from most professions .
Clinton warns that other authoritarian leaders are watching the Taliban’s methods closely. She emphasizes that the status of women’s rights is often a bellwether for the health of democracy, and attacking these rights accelerates the erosion of political freedom and stability globally .
