Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Envoy for Afghanistan, has strongly condemned the recent decree by the Taliban government regarding criminal courts, calling it cruel and demanding its immediate revocation. He echoed the concerns raised by United Nations experts, emphasizing that basic human rights must be respected for all Afghans.
Previously, a group of UN human rights experts led by Richard Bennett warned that this directive could further undermine fundamental rights in the country. In an official letter to the Taliban government, they noted that the decree lacks essential fair trial guarantees and legal transparency.
Major concerns include the absence of the presumption of innocence and the right to a defense lawyer. Experts fear that vague crime definitions could lead to arbitrary enforcement against vulnerable groups and civil activists.
