Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov stated at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting that instability in Afghanistan persists. He emphasized that the country remains a primary source of cross-border crime and major terrorism threats in the region.
The Russian official strictly criticized efforts by extra-regional countries to establish a military presence in Central Asia, calling such moves entirely unacceptable. He warned of the imminent danger of militants infiltrating neighboring states and SCO member countries from active crisis zones.
Despite its ongoing diplomatic engagement with the Taliban government, Russia has continuously expressed serious concerns regarding the impact of terrorist groups on Central Asian security. The SCO has previously echoed similar security anxieties.
