Matiullah Wesa, a prominent education activist and fierce defender of girls' right to education in Afghanistan, has proudly won the prestigious 2026 Freedom Prize. This globally recognized award was presented by the Normandy region of France, following a massive voting process involving over 18,000 young individuals from 75 different countries.

Wesa is the dedicated founder of the "Pen Path" association, an organization relying on thousands of volunteers to heavily promote education in deeply deprived Afghan regions. Because of his relentless advocacy, he was unfortunately arrested by the Taliban government in March 2023 and unjustly spent seven grueling months inside a prison.

The highly anticipated award ceremony is scheduled to officially take place on June 4 in Cannes, France, drawing thousands of attendees, including esteemed World War II veterans. Today, Afghanistan tragically remains the only country globally where secondary and higher education is strictly forbidden for girls and women.
