The Ministry of Justice of the Taliban government has validated child marriage under certain conditions in a newly published legal manual. However, the document notes that a child can annul the marriage through a court ruling upon reaching the age of puberty.

This thirty-one-article document details the separation of spouses under various circumstances. According to the manual, if a child is married off to an unsuitable partner or with an unfair dowry, the marriage is considered invalid, but annulment is only possible with a judge's order.

The publication of these rules comes as the Taliban government imposes extensive restrictions on Afghan women. The United Nations and human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned these restrictions as clear violations of the fundamental rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
