As the world celebrates International Day of Parliamentarism reports highlight that Afghanistan has been governed without a legislative body for nearly five years. Following the takeover by the Taliban government the national parliament and various other elected democratic institutions were completely dissolved.

The United Nations considers parliaments essential for protecting fundamental human rights and holding ruling governments accountable to the public. However in the complete absence of this institution in Afghanistan all laws and decrees are exclusively issued and enforced by the leaders of the Taliban government.

Legal experts strongly believe that the lack of a parliament has destroyed transparency in the legislative process and government oversight. Afghan citizens also express that the absence of a dedicated institution to represent their voices and demands is deeply felt across the nation.
