Afghanistan's transit trade through Pakistani routes has severely collapsed to its lowest level in recent years. Official data shows that the volume has plummeted from nearly eighty nine thousand containers to just over eleven thousand this financial year.
The massive decline is primarily driven by frequent border closures and the Taliban government's strategy to reduce reliance on Pakistani ports. Afghan businesses are increasingly utilizing alternative trade corridors through Iran and Central Asian countries.
The World Bank warns that these ongoing border restrictions and rising transportation costs have significantly increased the prices of essential goods in Afghan markets. Furthermore, the sharp drop in border trade has destroyed thousands of local jobs in logistics and customs sectors.
