July 29 is widely recognized as National Flag Day in Afghanistan. This date was officially designated in 2019 to honor the traditional tri-color flag and celebrate the nation's historical identity and unity.
Over the past century, Afghanistan has experienced numerous changes to its national flag due to shifting political regimes. Following their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban government replaced the tri-color flag with their own white banner.
Despite the internal changes imposed by the current administration, the United Nations continues to recognize the traditional flag. The black, red, and green banner remains the official symbol of Afghanistan's permanent mission at international diplomatic organizations.
