Hamida, a 50-year-old widow from Herat, walks daily into the forests of Khwaja Charshanba in Karukh district to collect medicinal herbs she sells to support her children. With no other livelihood available, she spends every day of the week in this rugged terrain.
After gathering the mountain herbs, Hamida packages them in plastic bags and sells them to visitors who come to the area for recreation. She sells them at 200 Afghanis per kilogram, saying it is her only means of survival.
The Khwaja Charshanba forest area, located 75 kilometers from Herat city, is a popular recreational destination in western Afghanistan. On leisure days, it also becomes a workplace for locals like Hamida who struggle to make ends meet.
