South Korean authorities announced that 19 people have died due to a severe heatwave. The country's president declared the current heatwave a "national natural disaster" and urged government agencies to take further steps to protect citizens, especially the elderly and vulnerable groups.
The government has increased the number of cooling shelters and transferred thousands of vulnerable people to air-conditioned facilities. Water-spraying trucks, mist stations, drinking water distribution, and welfare checks on the elderly are among the measures being implemented across cities.
On Sunday, a temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in the city of Yangsan in southeastern South Korea — the highest temperature recorded in the country in 122 years. Authorities also warned of rising electricity consumption and strain on the energy grid.
