Austria’s Interior Ministry said a 26-year-old Afghan migrant convicted of serious financial crimes and drug offenses was deported from Vienna to Istanbul and then to Kabul.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said deporting migrants is difficult for Austrian police, but this tough yet fair path will continue. Austria deported three people last year and two this year to Afghanistan.
In the first seven months of this year, Austria deported around 8,800 migrants to their home countries or through the Dublin procedure. 48 percent of those deported had criminal records.
