Germanys far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8 percent of the vote. The party secured 39 out of 83 seats in the state parliament but fell three seats short of an absolute majority.
35-year-old AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund said his party has made history and received a clear mandate to govern. Voter turnout was 77.8 percent.
The victory makes AfD the strongest party in the state. The heavy defeat of Chancellor Friedrich Merzs party has made forming a stable government difficult.
