The Islamic Republic of Iran has executed an Afghan citizen, Torat Mohammadi, on charges of espionage, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.

In a report released on Thursday, October 1, the rights group stated that the 42-year-old former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was executed at dawn on Wednesday, September 23, in Karaj Prison. The execution was reportedly carried out in secret, without his family being notified.

Mohammadi, who was married with four children, had been imprisoned for approximately two years. Citing its sources, Hengaw reported that he had been active in an IRGC-affiliated body before his arrest. Following his detention, he was held and interrogated for seven months at an IRGC intelligence detention center.

According to the report, Mohammadi was transferred to Karaj Central Prison just six days before his sentence was carried out. The execution proceeded without prior notification to his family or lawyer, and he was denied a final meeting with his wife and children.

The execution of Afghan nationals in Iran has seen a significant increase in recent years. Based on data collected by human rights organizations, nearly 190 Afghan citizens have been executed in Iran over the past three years.

This figure includes 80 individuals in 2024, 84 in 2025, and 23 so far in 2026. This trend has raised serious concerns about the legal and humanitarian situation of Afghan refugees and migrants in Iran.
