Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement in Yemen. He warned that the situation in the south of the Arabian Peninsula is deteriorating.
Russia's TASS news agency reported on Sunday, October 18, that Lavrov made the remarks at a press conference following the ninth round of the strategic dialogue between Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The talks focused on joint cooperation and regional issues.
Lavrov stated that Russia, along with its partners in the GCC, fully supports a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis. He added that the necessary foundations for resolving the conflict are already in place.
The Russian foreign minister specifically referred to a 2023 "roadmap" that was developed with the "active and leading role of Saudi Arabia." He described this plan as a solid basis for advancing peace negotiations.
The war in Yemen, which began in 2014, has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Numerous diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have so far failed to achieve a lasting resolution.
The GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Oman, is a key player in the conflict. Russia's alignment with the council on this issue could potentially boost peace efforts.
