UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stated on Tuesday that no movement exists among member states to formally recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

He emphasized that recognition decisions rest solely with individual governments, not the United Nations. Since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, only Russia has recognized the group as Afghanistan's legitimate government.

The UN continues to refer to the Taliban as "de facto authorities." The international community has consistently linked recognition to inclusive governance, respect for human rights — especially women's rights — and counter-terrorism commitments.
