Michael McCaul, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has criticized the Taliban’s ongoing restrictions against Afghan women and girls, stating that Afghanistan under the group’s rule is the “most oppressive” country in the world for women and girls. He also quoted a statement from the U.S. House of Representatives, emphasizing that Washington, in cooperation with its allies, must pressure the Taliban to end human rights violations against innocent Afghan men, women, and children. He stated that Afghanistan is facing a devastating humanitarian crisis under the “oppressive” rule of the Taliban.
This U.S. Republican member of the House of Representatives further asserted that the hard-won gains in advancing women’s rights and promoting democracy in Afghanistan have been undone by President Biden’s decision to unilaterally withdraw. He emphasized that it is time to expedite special visa requests for migration and hold the Taliban accountable for their crimes.
