Iran Appoints New Diplomatic Representative in Kabul Amid Protocol Shifts
Iran has appointed Alireza Bikdeli as the new head of mission in Kabul, replacing Hassan Kazemi Qomi. This change marks a significant shift in diplomatic protocol, as Bikdeli’s title is officially “Chargé d’Affairs” rather than “Special Representative of the President,” indicating a downgrade in diplomatic relations.
Bikdeli brings substantial diplomatic experience, having previously served as ambassador to Turkey and held the position of Deputy for Consular Affairs and Parliamentary matters in Iran’s Foreign Ministry. This appointment comes at a time when Iran, like Pakistan and the United States, has eliminated its special envoy position for Afghanistan.
The Taliban continues to refer to Iranian representatives as “ambassadors,” despite Iran not officially recognizing the Taliban government. This diplomatic nuance reflects the complex relationship between Tehran and Kabul’s current authorities.
