Representatives from over ten countries strongly condemned human rights violations in Afghanistan during the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council held on Monday, June 16, 2025.
During this meeting, Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur, presented his report on access to justice and protection of Afghan women and girls.
Countries including Canada, Italy, Indonesia, Qatar, and Switzerland expressed deep concern over the suppression of women, gender-based harassment, and public executions by the Taliban group.
These nations called for Taliban accountability and promised cooperation in education and learning opportunities for Afghan women.
According to Bennett’s report, the Taliban’s judicial system has enabled the oppression of women and eliminated their access to justice.
Representatives also expressed concerns about the situation of LGBTQ+ individuals, the Hazara community, and religious minorities in Afghanistan, who continue to face severe discrimination and persecution.
