Arafat Jamal, the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Afghanistan, has called on countries not to reduce their assistance to Afghanistan during the current crisis.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, quoting Arafat Jamal that millions of Afghans are returning to their country after decades of conflict.
According to Jamal, cutting aid threatens the lives of returnees, and the international community should not stop its investments in Afghanistan. He emphasized that “humanitarian aid is not just assistance, but hope for the people of Afghanistan.”
This request comes as the forced deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan continues. UN agencies have announced that humanitarian aid to Afghanistan has decreased by 40 percent, an issue that could create additional challenges for returning Afghans.
