The Embassy of Afghanistan in Japan, operated by diplomats from the former government, has announced it will suspend all operations effective January 31, 2026.

The embassy stated that this decision was reached following extensive consultations and a mutual agreement with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the official statement, all political, economic, and consular services will be paused until further notice.

However, the Japanese government has pledged to respect and maintain the embassy premises in compliance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The mission is currently led by Ambassador Shaida Mohammad Abdali, who was appointed by the former Afghan president in early 2021.

This suspension marks a significant development regarding the diplomatic presence of the former republic in East Asia.
