Shaharzad Akbar, former chair of the Independent Human Rights Commission, stated that the Taliban continue to arbitrarily detain and torture citizens. Citing a report by “Rawadari,” she emphasized that these crimes are being documented for future accountability.
The report indicates a 30% increase in targeted and extrajudicial killings in the first half of 2025. At least 251 people have been killed under mysterious circumstances, highlighting the deteriorating security for civilians.
Akbar noted that international judicial mechanisms can hold perpetrators criminally responsible. The Taliban have faced widespread accusations of violating the rights of women and ethnic groups over the past four years.
