On the International Day of Education, shocking statistics regarding the state of education in Afghanistan have been released. The United Nations reports that 2.2 million adolescent Afghan girls are currently deprived of attending secondary schools. The organization warns that this continued exclusion seriously undermines the future of these girls and the stability of the country.
UNICEF and UNESCO issued a joint statement describing the situation as “painful,” noting that Afghanistan is the only country in the world where women’s education is completely banned. They have called for urgent global action and investment to ensure safe and inclusive access to learning for everyone, urging an end to the restrictions.
Citing the impact on the nation, UNESCO’s acting head in Afghanistan, Seohyun Kim, stated that when girls are denied access to education, the entire nation pays the price. It has been nearly four and a half years since secondary schools were closed to girls, and the higher education system is facing gradual collapse.
