The Taliban Ministry of Justice has cancelled the operating licenses of nearly 1,600 social, civil, and cultural organizations in Afghanistan. The banned list includes prominent entities such as the Hamid Karzai Foundation, the Nasser Khosrow Balkhi Foundation, and various women’s and Shia community associations.
While no specific reason was given, officials previously stated such moves were to “regulate” the sector. The Karzai Foundation, established in 2015 to support youth education, had operated as a non-political entity working with education ministries, but is now forced to close.
This crackdown follows the recent revocation of licenses for most media support organizations. The systematic dismantling of independent civil society groups indicates the Taliban’s intent to eliminate any organizational structures outside their direct control.
