Daoud Naji, head of the political committee of the Afghanistan Freedom Front, sharply criticized the approach to history in the country on the anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal. He stated that nations who only “celebrate” their past accomplish nothing, while progress belongs to those who “analyze” history and learn from it.
Pointing to Afghanistan’s current poverty, Naji noted that while Afghans claim to have defeated superpowers like Britain and the USSR and celebrate it, those nations are now developed while Afghanistan remains destitute. He emphasized that a country cannot be governed by Stone Age laws, public floggings, and executions, and that moral advice is no substitute for modern law.
These remarks coincided with a public holiday declared by the Taliban for the Red Army’s exit. Naji highlighted the bitter irony that the Taliban, despite their slogans, are now keenly interested in establishing relations with the very Russia whose defeat they are celebrating.
