A 55-year-old woman in Herat has been arrested on suspicion of throwing an 18-month-old child named Noran from the fifth floor of a building in the Qol Ordu family residential area. The child died from the fall; the family had recently returned to Herat from Germany.
A Taliban security spokesman in Herat said the suspect confessed during initial questioning. The woman had been working as a cleaner in the household and was facing dismissal after being accused of stealing a mobile phone and cash.
According to reports, early Thursday morning on August 6, while the family was preoccupied with the phone dispute, the woman went to the fifth floor and threw the child from a window. Authorities say further investigation is underway to establish the full facts of the case.
