Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan's Chargé d'Affaires at the United Nations, has warned that economic cooperation should not become a path to legitimizing the Taliban government, in response to comments by a Qatari minister.

In a post on the social media platform X on Tuesday night, October 20, Mr. Faiq emphasized that economic development should not serve to consolidate the ruling group's power. "Afghanistan's economic revival cannot be separated from the fundamental rights of its people, especially women and girls who continue to face systematic discrimination and deprivation under Taliban rule," he said.

The Afghan diplomat added that while humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan must continue, sustainable economic stability requires a credible and inclusive political process led by the Afghan people. This process, he argued, must lead to the formation of a legitimate and accountable government based on the will of the people and Afghanistan's international commitments.

This reaction follows a statement by Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Musnad, Qatar's Minister of State for International Cooperation, who called for a transition from humanitarian response to supporting Afghanistan's economic recovery during a meeting in Doha. The Qatari minister had stressed strengthening the private sector and international cooperation to foster long-term stability.

Mr. Faiq further wrote, "Afghan women and the people of Afghanistan deserve more than just economic promises. They deserve freedom, human dignity, justice, and an effective voice in determining their country's future."

Since the Taliban's return to power, Qatar has maintained extensive relations with the group and has often acted as a mediator between the Taliban and Western countries. Officials in Doha have consistently called for continued engagement and economic cooperation with Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
